Skeiðarárjökull

Skeiðarárjökull is one of the largest outlet glaciers of the Vatnajökull ice cap in Iceland, located in the southeast of the country.

The glacier is known for its dynamic and changing landscape, with frequent glacial floods, known as jökulhlaups, caused by volcanic activity beneath the ice. These floods have historically caused significant damage to the surrounding areas, particularly to the Skeiðarársandur outwash plain.

Skeiðarárjökull is part of the Vatnajökull National Park, which is one of Europe’s largest national parks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The glacier and its surrounding landscapes offer a unique opportunity to study glacial and volcanic interactions, as well as to experience the dramatic natural beauty of Iceland.
